Indiana Schools May Get New Alert Systems

Unfortunately, we are all too familiar with stories about emergency situations happening in schools, not limited to shootings we hear about more and more often.

Schools in northwestern Indiana are already taking action to protect their students and staff in the event of an emergency. All schools in Porter County currently use an alert system that allows school leaders to trigger an alert that sends out a mobile app notification to emergency personnel. The alert also gives the sheriff’s office access to live video feed inside the school. Officers are also given a fob that allows them access into the school. All of this greatly speeds up response time.

Now, Governor Holcomb is expected to sign a bill that would allow for school in all 92 Indiana counties to request funding for the same alert system. According to WTHR, “the state’s Secured School Fund has almost $10 million available for grants to support a statewide program and other safety priorities.”
