Beyonce's Surprise Album Is a Phenomenon . . . and It's Selling Like Crazy
Somehow BEYONCÉ managed to SURPRISE THE WORLD by abruptly releasing a new album on iTunes at midnight on Thursday. And it's selling like CRAZY.
The self-titled album sold over 430,000 copies in just ONE day, which is basically unheard of these days. Especially when you consider it's only available on iTunes, and no one had ANY CLUE it was coming out . . . until it did.
In fact, it reportedly sold 80,000 copies within the first THREE HOURS it was available.
Obviously, that guarantees it a #1 debut on the Billboard 200 for last week. The sales numbers for the week ran through yesterday, but the final numbers won't be released until Wednesday
Early estimates say it racked up at least 600,000 downloads over the weekend.
The iTunes exclusive "visual" album is selling for $15.99, and contains 14 tracks. It also includes 14 videos, with other bonus video content. It's unclear if or when it'll be released on CD.
The "New York Daily News" reports that the album generated more than 1.2 million Tweets in just 12 hours, including a "Tweets per minute" spike of 5,300, which was roughly 300 more than "Sharknado" notched during its peak halfway through its original telecast.
Over the weekend, Beyoncé put out a video explaining that she wanted to unleash an album . . . as a surprise, with all the videos done . . . so that people could absorb it all at once.
She said, quote, "Now people only listen to a few seconds of a song on their iPods. They don't really invest [in] a whole album. It's all about the single and the hype . . .
"I wanted to make this body of work, and I feel like it's something that's lost in pop music. I wanted people to have a different first impression . . . not just listen to a 10-second clip, but to actually be able to see the whole vision of the album."
The celebrity world went nuts over the album. Here's some reactions:
Katy Perry: "Don't talk to me today unless it's about Beyoncé. Thanks."
Demi Lovato: "Um . . . Beyoncé just dropped a surprise album?!!?! #SooooGood #OnRepeat . . . I'm literally FUH-REAKING OUT over this . . . the music vids?!!?! I CANT HANDLE THIS MUCH FIERCENESS . . . #NoJoke #Dying . . .
"HOW IS ANYONE NOT TWEETING ABOUT #BEYONCÉ RIGHT NOW?!!?!?"
Lady Gaga: "Good Morning! . . . Welcome back, Honey B. We missed you! <3"
Diplo: "Did Beyoncé explode or something? What's goin' on? Confused."
Snoop Dogg: "My girl Beyoncé just changed da game!"
Alicia Keys: "Love this!! Shine on mama!!!! ;-) @Beyoncé."
Cher: "I haven't heard it, but how can you NOT love Beyoncé?"
Pete Wentz: "I think Beyoncé just broke the Internet."
