Bruno Mars' Halftime Performance Was Amazing
BRUNO MARS and the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS brought SHEER PERFORMANCE back into the Super Bowl halftime show . . . a welcome change after years of focus on "spectacle" and "manufactured controversy."
The show started with a children's choir, followed by a drum solo by Bruno.
Now, some people have reported that it was Bruno's brother Eric . . . who's his drummer, and who DOES look like Bruno . . . but it wasn't.  It was Bruno.
Then, Bruno jumped in front of his band and launched into a medley of his hits . . . including "Locked Out of Heaven", "Treasure", "Runaway Baby", and "Just the Way You Are".
In the middle of his set, he also did a brief interlude of the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS song "Give It Away", before they popped up onstage to perform the rest of it.  Bruno and his band stuck around, joining in.
The Peppers were only there for that one song . . . perhaps because they were a little cold.  Both singer ANTHONY KIEDIS and bassist FLEA were SHIRTLESS . . . although Anthony had some weird leggings on.
It wasn't just the music that was great though . . . Bruno also showed off some wicked dance moves, which were a little like JAMES BROWN-meets-MICHAEL JACKSON.
And of course, there was a big element of "spectacle" as well . . . with fireworks, lasers, sparklers, and video dedications from soldiers to their families.  There was a lot of stuff going on . . . but it all seemed to FIT and work as it hasn't always in years past.
Whether or not you're a fan of Bruno's . . . or the Red Hot Chili Peppers . . . it seemed like a crowd-pleasing performance that may have had everyone at your Super Bowl party entertained, regardless of age.
Philip Seymour Hoffman Has Died . . . Probably of a Heroin Overdose
PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN was found dead in his Manhattan apartment yesterday.  He was 46 years old.  There's no official word on the cause of death, but it was pretty obviously a heroin overdose.
He was supposed to pick up his kids at 9:00 A.M. but he never showed.  So a friend went to check on him at around 11:30, and found his body in the bathroom.  Police sources say he had a needle in his arm, and heroin packets next to him.
Hoffman was a recovering addict who had a relapse recently, and checked himself into rehab back in May after admitting to SNORTING heroin.  Before his relapse, he had been clean for more than 20 years.
In a 2006 "60 Minutes" interview, he said, quote, "I have so much empathy for these young actors that are 19 and all of a sudden they're beautiful and famous and rich.  I'm like, 'Oh my God, I'd be dead."'
Philip Seymour Hoffman won the Best Actor Oscar and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of author Truman Capote in the 2005 film "Capote".  He also earned Oscar nominations for "The Master", "Doubt" and "Charlie Wilson's War".
His other films included "Boogie Nights", "Almost Famous" and "Magnolia".
And he also played Plutarch Heavensbee in the "Hunger Games" sequel, "Catching Fire".
As for the two movies that will cover the final book in the series, "Mockingjay", producers say he finished filming the first one, and was six or seven days away from finishing the second.  They didn't say how they'll deal with that.
Hoffman was also working on a series for Showtime called "Happyish".  It's not clear whether Showtime will cancel it or recast the role and move on.
Is Sandra Bullock Dating Troy Aikman?
This is an odd pairing if it's true.  Closer magazine and the Belfast Telegraph claim SANDRA BULLOCK is casually dating Super Bowl announcer TROY AIKMAN.
A source tells the sites, "Sandra and Troy have always got on well, but she doesn't want to publicly date him until she's 100 per cent ready for a relationship. She's also worried about getting her heart broken, so a no-strings fling is fine, but she's not committing to anything yet. Sandra hasn't introduced Troy to Louis as anything other than mommy's friend.''
It Was a Rough Weekend at the Box Office
There wasn't a lot to see at the theaters this weekend so apparently no one went.  "Ride Along" was #1 again. Here are this past weekend's box office results.
1."Ride Along," $12.3 million.
2."Frozen," $9.3 million.
3."That Awkward Moment," $9 million.
4."The Nut Job," $7.6 million.
5."Lone Survivor," $7.2 million.
